Are U.S. Hospitals Using High-Sensitivity Troponin Assays for Suspected MI?

Utilization has risen, without feared increases in subsequent cardiac testing overall.

High-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) assays are recommended to improve detection of myocardial infarction (MI). But how frequently are these assays being used in the United States? In this analysis from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry Chest Pain–MI Registry, investigators report that among 550 participating hospitals, use of hs-cTn assays increased from 3.3% in 2019 to 32.6% in 2021. In examining the association of hs-cTn assay use (vs. conventional assay use) with in-hospital cardiac testing and outcomes, they found the following:
