Low serum creatinine levels are associated with sarcopenia and frailty, which in turn predict adverse perioperative outcomes. In this study, researchers examined whether low preoperative serum creatinine correlated with mortality and complications after nonemergent inpatient surgery. The source of data was the U.S. National Surgical Quality Improvement Program; patients with conditions known to raise or lower serum creatinine acutely or subacutely were excluded.
