Most physicians know of other physicians who succumbed to COVID-19. In this study, researchers used data from the American Medical Association and calculated the number of excess deaths among U.S. physicians 45 to 84 years old from March 2020 through December 2021.
Findings were as follows:
Among 786,000 physicians, 4,511 died — 622 more than expected.
There was a strong age gradient: 10 excess deaths per 100,000 person-years in physicians 45 to 64 years old, and 182 per 100,000 in the those 75 to 84 years old.
Nonactive physicians had the highest excess deaths per 100,000 person-years (140), followed by actively practicing physicians providing direct patient care (27) and physicians not providing direct patient care (22) — all lower than the r…
