Experts define key features of a complex autoimmune disease.
An international panel gathered to define the first set of criteria for diagnosing myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody–associated disease (MOGAD).
Reviewing the evidence, the panel noted that monophasic and relapsing forms of MOGAD are recognized to exist. The clinical presentation is more varied than that of aquaporin-4 antibody disease (AQP4+). Acute disseminate encephalomyelitis is the most common clinical presentation in children, whereas optic neuritis is most common in adults. Additional clinical presentations include transverse myelitis, cortical encephalitis, brainstem and cerebellar syndromes, tumefactive brain lesions, cranial neuropathies, and progressive white-matter damage.
