After ischemic stroke, statin therapy is recommended to decrease the rate of recurrent stroke and other major vascular events. Guidelines have recommended statin treatment for more than a decade, but data on patterns of statin use after stroke are limited. In this retrospective study, researchers analyzed data on patients discharged from 20 hospitals in Finland from 2005 through 2017. They assessed statin use or nonuse within the first 90 days after hospital discharge. The researchers also evaluated the rate of recurrent vascular events (stroke, myocardial infarction) and death for up to 12 years. Patients who were not discharged home or to “home-like facilities” were excluded from analysis.
