Treatment options for patients with severe, symptomatic tricuspid regurgitation (TR) are currently limited to medical therapy (diuretics) and surgery, which is only rarely offered. Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) with a clip can reduce TR and was compared with medical therapy alone in a randomized trial funded by the device maker (NCT03904147).
Of the 350 randomized patients (mean age, 78 years; 55% women), 94% had functional TR (90% with atrial fibrillation) and 25% had been hospitalized for heart failure in the year before enrollment. The median length of stay was 1 day, and no in-hospital deaths occurred, although 7% of clips detached from a single leaflet without adverse sequelae.
