Overuse of telemetry slows hospital throughput, causes alarm fatigue, and potentially leads to patient harm. Although electronic health record (EHR) interventions have been shown to lower telemetry use, such interventions all have been assessed at single centers. Now, researchers have performed a multisite quality-improvement project in adult, non–intensive care inpatients at New York City Health and Hospitals, an 11-hospital urban safety net system. The intervention comprised two components: (1) a displayed list of widely accepted clinical telemetry admission indications from which clinicians selected, and (2) a best practice advisory (BPA) prompt that appeared after a recommended time period and suggested telemetry discontinuation.
