Many conditions have been associated with Alzheimer disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD). Among the most common risk factors are older age, genetic factors, family history, and education level, as well as several health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. The prediction of future dementia in older individuals is still difficult because the pathway to dementia is heterogenous and multifactorial. In this study, investigators examined medical records to determine health conditions associated with AD or VaD at various intervals prior to the diagnosis of dementia.
