Endovascular Thrombectomy for Basilar Artery Occlusion

Analysis of an administrative database suggests a modest benefit from EVT, but questions remain.

Two recent clinical trials (ATTENTION and BAOCHE) reported from China demonstrated value from endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in select patients with basilar artery occlusion (BAO; NEJM JW Neurol Oct 12 2022). However, due to the strict enrollment criteria of these studies, questions remain about the generalizability of the results. These authors analyzed the U.S. Nationwide Inpatient Sample for cases of basilar artery occlusion. They evaluated patients treated with EVT and, using propensity score techniques, compared outcomes for the EVT patients with those of medically treated patients.
