Fungal infections represent an increasing world-wide threat epitomized by the spread of multi-drug resistant Candida auris and prompting the need for new antifungals. Rezzayo™ (rezafungin for injection), a long-acting echinocandin antifungal, was recently approved in the U.S. for intravenous (IV) use in adults with candidemia and invasive candidiasis.
Spectrum of Action: Like other echinocandin antifungals, rezafungin targets 1,3-β-D-glucan synthesis and has a broad range of activity against Candida, Aspergillus, and Pneumocystis species. In an experimental immunocompromised mouse model, rezafungin yielded a lower fungal burden in C. auris infection compared with amphotericin B or micafungin.
