Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fever in India: Burdens Remain High

Surveillance from 2017–2020 showed disease rates were highest among young children and 98% of blood isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin.

WHO recommends Vi polysaccharide-based typhoid vaccines for countries with high burden of typhoid fever (NEJM JW Infect Dis Nov 2021 and Lancet 2021; 398:675; [e-pub]; NEJM JW Infect Dis Nov 2021 and N Engl J Med 2021; 385:1104). To document contemporary disease burden in India, researchers conducted weekly surveillance for acute febrile illness at 4 sites (3 urban and 1 rural) from 2017 through 2020, measuring incidence of typhoid and paratyphoid fever (confirmed by blood culture) in children aged 6 months–14 years. They estimated community incidence at 6 additional sites with combined blood-culture testing of febrile hospitalized patients.
