Mammalian cells use the biological process of DNA methylation (DNAm) to regulate gene expression by silencing gene sequences. Studies are showing that DNAm has an association with the aging process and can provide an estimate of biological age, with some people experiencing epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) and others epigenetic age deceleration (EAD).
Investigators used comprehensive cross-sectional data collected as part of Google's Project Baseline Health Study to assess the relationship between clinical factors and EAA. Of the 1661 participants (mean age, 48 years; 48% men; 17% Black), 195 (12%) had EAD and 188 (11%) had EAA.
