Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can lead to fibrosis if left untreated. Young children present with feeding disorders, vomiting, and abdominal pain, whereas older children and adults have dysphagia and food impaction. Treatment is suboptimal and consists of food avoidance, high-dose proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), swallowed steroids, and dupilumab.
In a multisite U.S. study, researchers randomized 129 adults with EoE to the 1-food elimination diet (1FED; eliminating just animal-derived milk) or the 6-food elimination diet (6FED; eliminating animal-derived milk, wheat, egg, soy, fish and shellfish, and peanut and tree nuts).
