Fosmanogepix Shows Promise for Managing Disseminated Fusarium Infection

A patient with prolonged neutropenia and Fusarium lactis infection of the central nervous system improved after fosmanogepix therapy.

Infections with Fusarium species in immunocompromised hosts frequently result in systemic dissemination with high mortality despite use of currently available antifungals. Fosmanogepix is a prodrug of manogepix, a novel antifungal that inhibits glycosylphosphatidylinositol biosynthesis, impeding fungal adhesion and immune evasion. The drug has a broad range of activity against Candida, Aspergillus, and other molds and is available by oral and intravenous routes.
