Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) causes considerable lethality despite prolonged antibiotic treatment. Risk factors include invasive procedures (primarily vascular devices), diabetes mellitus, and immunodeficiencies. Now, researchers in Germany present data on SAB evolution in three prospective cohorts of 1797 patients treated for SAB between 2006 and 2011, in 2013, and in 2019 (mean age, 66; 34% female).
The annual number of SAB patients increased significantly by 7.4%.
