Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) have been associated with an increased risk for chronic hypertension in both mothers and offspring. To quantify the risk for chronic hypertension in adulthood among offspring from pregnancies affected by HDP (gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, preeclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension, or eclampsia), investigators analyzed data from a large population-based cohort study. Data were available from 8755 individuals born in one Minnesota county to 6658 women.
The offspring of mothers with HDP (comprising 7.5% of offspring) had a significantly higher incidence of chronic hypertension by age 30 years (8.9% vs. 5.5%) and 40 years (22.5% vs. 15.7%) compared with offspring of mothers without HDP.…
