Most patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections can be cured by direct-acting antiviral treatment, but prognosis after cure remains uncertain. In this study, researchers calculated age-, sex-, and calendar year–adjusted cause-specific mortality for 21,000 patients who were treated successfully for HCV from 2014 through 2019 and were enrolled in registries in England, Scotland, and British Columbia, Canada. Mortality was stratified by severity of liver disease (i.e., no cirrhosis, compensated cirrhosis, and end-stage liver disease) and compared with that of the general population.
