To clarify the neurodevelopmental effects of fetal exposure to newer antiseizure medications, investigators in the ongoing, prospective, observational Maternal Outcomes and Neurodevelopmental Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs (MONEAD) study enrolled women with and without epilepsy during pregnancy and have followed their offspring over time. The current study investigated links among verbal performance in 3-year-old children, fetal exposure to antiseizure medications (ASMs), and the amount of ASM exposure.
