Risk for suicide among physicians generally is reported to be about twice that of the general population, based on older studies and meta-analyses. In this study, researchers explored suicide risk among U.S. physicians and other healthcare workers using more-recent data. A national dataset of healthcare workers, linked to a national death registry, was used to identify about 180,000 community-based workers in six healthcare-related professions; a reference group of 1.7 million non–healthcare workers also was assembled. The cohorts were created in 2008 and were followed until 2019.
