Common risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes are known to contribute to ischemic stroke and to be associated with different stroke subtypes. However, we do not know the extent to which stroke subtypes overlap and how subtypes are associated with later vascular events.
To address these issues, investigators conducted a prospective, international registry cohort study of 3847 patients (mean age, 66 years; 60% men) who suffered a minor ischemic stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA) within 7 days of enrollment and then completed 5 years of follow-up.
