Statins effectively lower LDL-cholesterol levels and risk for future adverse cardiovascular (CV) events, but few randomized trials have compared available statins with each other. A recent randomized trial from South Korea showed that 4400 patients (mean age, 65) with CV disease who were treated with statins had similar lipid levels and adverse CV outcomes after 3 years regardless of whether statins were started at a high-intensity dose or were titrated up from a less-intense starting dose, with a target LDL-cholesterol goal of 50 to 70 mg/dL (NEJM JW Gen Med Apr 1 2023 and JAMA 2023; 329:1078).
