Transcatheter aortic-valve replacement (TAVR) has transformed the care of people with aortic stenosis, but questions remain about long-term outcomes. In the multicenter PARTNER 3 trial, investigators randomized 1000 patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis and low surgical risk to undergo TAVR with the balloon-expandable SAPIEN 3 transcatheter heart valve or surgical aortic-valve replacement (SAVR). The trial showed favorable outcomes with TAVR at 1 year (NEJM JW Cardiol Mar 17 2019 and N Engl J Med 2019; 380:1695). Now, 5-year follow-up results are available.
