Statin Therapy for Critically Ill Patients with COVID-19

In a randomized trial, simvastatin failed to show a treatment effect, although a smaller benefit is still possible.

Although effective therapies such as corticosteroids and antiviral agents are available for treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients, mortality remains high, warranting the search for additional therapies. Statins are known to exert anti-inflammatory properties and are postulated to have a potential impact on COVID-19 through cholesterol-mediated as well as pleiotropic effects. Also, some observational studies report an association between statin use and better outcomes in patients with COVID-19.
