Physical activity promotes brain health. In this study, researchers assessed how tai ji quan (otherwise known as tai chi) affected cognition in community-dwelling adults 65 years or older with subjective cognitive symptoms and mild cognitive impairment.
Participants were randomized to one of three groups:
A standard tai ji quan group, learning eight movement forms via verbal and visual instruction
A cognitively enhanced tai ji quan group, additionally completing other cognitive and motor tasks related to each form, such as verbally repeating each step of the form and performing the forms without cues
A stretching group
