Patients with cryptogenic stroke often are monitored for intermittent atrial fibrillation (AF). Patients with stroke of other mechanisms, such as large-vessel atherosclerosis or small-vessel disease, also carry a risk for AF, but their long-term AF occurrence rate is unclear. These authors conducted extended follow-up analysis of a multicenter, randomized clinical trial that enrolled patients within 10 days of an ischemic stroke due to either large-vessel atherosclerosis or small-vessel occlusive disease. The primary outcome was AF detection with an insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) or usual care. The main study results reported 1-year AF detection rate, which was approximately 12%. This report provides 3-year outcomes.
