As cannabis becomes more accessible (37 states have legalized it to date) clinicians might be curious about frequency of use among patients with serious chronic illnesses.
Patients undergoing cancer treatment at a single midwestern cancer center were surveyed about their experience of illness and treatment. Among 267 respondents (mean age, 58; 70% women; 88% white), recent alcohol use and prescription pain medication use each were reported by 37%, and 26% reported recent cannabis use (most of them as part of a “medical marijuana” program).
