The guideline-recommended strategy of dietary sodium restriction for management of hypertension is debated because of variation in individual response to sodium intake. To examine the blood pressure (BP) response to dietary sodium restriction and whether it varies by hypertension status or use of antihypertensive medications, investigators randomized 228 individuals (65% women; 64% Black) aged 50 to 75 years to consume a high-sodium (≈2200 mg added to usual diet) or low-sodium diet (≈500 mg daily total) for 1 week, followed by the alternate diet. Participants were enrolled in the ongoing, longitudinal, community-based CARDIA study (NCT02458332).
