Tickborne encephalitis (TBE) virus is a flavivirus with a geographic distribution spanning large swaths of Europe and Asia, with three major genotypes: European, Siberian, and Far Eastern. Transmission usually occurs via Ixodes tick bites in wooded areas, and occasionally occurs via ingestion of unpasteurized dairy products (laboratory workers constitute another at-risk group). TBE viral infection is asymptomatic in 75% of cases; disease manifestations include undifferentiated viral illness, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, and meningoencephalomyelitis.
