Preemptive treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an effective strategy for preventing tissue-invasive disease in patients receiving hematopoietic cell transplants (HCTs). However, current therapy is often complicated by toxicity such as myelosuppression with valganciclovir and renal dysfunction with foscarnet and cidofovir. Maribavir, an orally available agent with a unique mechanism of action (inhibition of CMV-specific U97 protein kinase), has been approved for post-transplantation treatment of CMV infection.
