The NEJM Journal Watch Infectious Diseases Top Stories list for 2023 encompasses practice-changing studies on prevention and treatment of a broad range of infectious diseases. Advances in prevention include studies of new vaccines to reduce the incidence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in infants and older adults (which led to FDA approval of, and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendations for, these vaccines); a trial demonstrating that postexposure prophylaxis with doxycycline prevents bacterial sexually transmitted infections; and a study that led the FDA to approve letermovir for prevention of cytomegalovirus disease in high-risk kidney transplant recipients.
