Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) represent a common complication of central venous catheters (CVCs) for hemodialysis, with notable morbidity and mortality. Taurolidine is a novel taurine-derived, broad-spectrum antimicrobial compound with a unique mechanism of action. In a randomized trial, researchers at 70 U.S. centers have now assessed prevention of CRBSIs with catheter lock solutions using 13.5 mg/ml taurolidine plus 1000 unit/ml heparin (T/H) versus standard 1000 unit/ml heparin (H) in 795 patients receiving chronic hemodialysis with CVCs. The primary endpoint was time to CRBSI.
