Dear Colleagues,
1996. 28 years ago. Wow.
That was when I started at NEJM Journal Watch Cardiology. I was 4 years into my faculty position when Kim Eagle called me, and I was thrilled. I had the opportunity to work with bright members of our profession to evaluate key published articles and share insights through the summaries. Eventually, I had the privilege to succeed Kim as Editor-in-Chief, and I have continued in that role since 2000.
With terrific co-editors and an exceptional editorial team at NEJM Group, it has been one of those rare opportunities that enriched me personally and professionally. We worked hard to inform people about the literature and to provide information that would elevate practice. What was most meaningful was the relationships among the group — and with our readers.
Now, I have just been named the next Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) and it is time for me to leave NEJM Journal Watch Cardiology. I do so with gratitude and more than a tinge of sadness. I am excited by the opportunities at JACC — and intend to do my best to set new standards for what a family of journals can accomplish. And know that I welcome your comments and suggestions in my new role, as I have in my old role. But I will miss my service at Journal Watch Cardiology, and all those who became friends and family to me.
Fortunately, with Karol Watson at the helm and a capable team around her, NEJM Journal Watch Cardiology is in great shape.
And thank you all for your continuing support of me and NEJM Journal Watch Cardiology. For the past 28 years.
Best to everyone in 2024.
— Harlan
Dear Readers,
On behalf of the entire editorial staff of NEJM Journal Watch, I'd like to express my gratitude to Harlan for his contributions over nearly three decades, during which he has become a national leader in cardiology and in healthcare generally. One of his great attributes is his ability to balance evidence-based rigor with common sense — the perfect combination for our publication. We will miss Harlan, but as noted above, we're in good hands with Karol Watson, who has shared the NEJM Journal Watch Cardiology Editor-in-Chief position with him for the past 2 years.
— Allan Brett, MD, Editor-in-Chief of the NEJM Journal Watch group of publications
