Primary aldosteronism (PA) affects ≈10% of patients with hypertension and as many as 25% of patients with treatment-resistant hypertension. Yet, prior studies have shown that only 2% to 4% of PA screening candidates actually are screened. In this prospective study, Michigan researchers evaluated an electronic health record (EHR) best practice advisory (BPA) for PA screening in adult outpatients who had not been screened previously and who had at least one of the following: currently taking ≥4 antihypertensive drugs; hypokalemia; age, <35; or ≥1 adrenal nodule. The BPA was “noninterruptive” (i.e., the clinician can continue working in the EHR without responding to the alert).
