The diabetes drug exenatide has recently drawn headlines as a potential treatment and possible disease-modifying agent for Parkinson disease (PD). These authors tested NLY01, a brain-penetrant, pegylated, longer-lasting version of the diabetes drug exenatide that acts as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist to reduce microglia activation. The manufacturer-sponsored study was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial and included only patients with early, untreated PD. The 255 patients were randomly assigned to receive 2.5 mg or 5 mg of NLY01 or placebo subcutaneously each week for 36 weeks.
