In June of 2023, the CDC reported an outbreak of Fusarium solani meningitis in 212 immunocompetent travelers who had received epidural anesthesia for cosmetic surgery at two clinics in Mexico (NEJM JW Infect Dis Jun 23 2023 and CDC 2023 Jun 1; [e-pub]). This update provides information on presentation, clinical course, and treatment of 13 patients subsequently hospitalized in Texas.
All patients had central nervous system infection consistent with meningitis. Diagnosis was based on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) abnormalities, fungal culture, panfungal PCR testing, and elevated levels of 1,3-beta-D-glucan levels.
