Due to the cross-immunogenicity among the orthopoxviruses (including smallpox, vaccinia, and mpox viruses), smallpox vaccination can protect against mpox in humans (NEJM JW Infect Dis Jun 8 2023; multiple citations). To evaluate the anti-mpox neutralizing antibody responses to LC16m8, a replicating cell culture–derived, vaccinia virus–based vaccine, investigators in Japan immunized 50 healthy adult healthcare workers (median age, 35; 12% previously immunized against smallpox) with one dose of LC16m8; they then assessed safety and immunogenicity over a 6-month period.
At 28 days after vaccination, rates of seroconversion (defined as an 8-fold rise in neutralizing antibody titers) were 72% (Clade I mpox), 70% (Clade IIa mpox), and 88% (LC16m8)…
