One cause of long COVID might be a failure to clear residual virus from the body. Because COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective at lowering the incidence and reducing the severity of acute COVID-19, they also might lower risk for long COVID, as suggested by previous studies (NEJM JW Gen Med May 1 2023 and JAMA Intern Med 2023; 183:566). However, most studies have been small and not representative of the entire population and have not included patients' symptom history in prepandemic years; in addition, most have not included a never-infected comparison group — people who might experience some of the same nonspecific symptoms seen in patients with long COVID.
