Because of its anatomy and physiology, the adrenal gland is susceptible to bleeding, but the clinical spectrum of adrenal hemorrhage is poorly understood. In this retrospective study, Mayo Clinic researchers used an institutional radiologic database and identified 363 adults (median age, 62) who experienced adrenal hemorrhage from 2017 to 2021.
Key findings were as follows:
Adrenal hemorrhage was unilateral in 93% of cases and bilateral in 7%.
The most common presentation was incidental (42%), followed by trauma (28%), abdomen or back pain (25%), critical illness (4%), and symptoms of adrenal insufficiency (1%).
