Although vaccination of solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) is an important tool in preventing severe COVID-19 infection, these individuals often have suboptimal responses to immunization. As the best vaccination schedule has not yet been established, a three-dose primary series followed by a subsequent booster is currently recommended. To examine this issue further, investigators at Moderna conducted an open-label phase 3b post-marketing study of the mRNA-1273 vaccine to assess its safety and immunogenicity in 214 SOTRs (137 kidney recipients and 77 liver recipients) and 20 immunocompetent participants; enrollment began in April of 2021.
