To add value to NEJM Journal Watch, we are considering adding an occasional feature called Drug Watch, which would focus on recent approvals of “New Molecular Entities” by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These drugs have novel structures that usually don't duplicate previously available medications for a given clinical indication.
Of the 11 such drugs that have been approved in 2024 as of this writing, two address common clinical disorders, and we have published a Drug Watch for each of them. One covered the first drug specifically approved for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NEJM JW Gen Med Apr 15 2024), and the second covered a new antihypertensive drug with a novel mechanism of action (NEJM JW Gen Med May 1 2024). Please have a look at these two summaries and email us with your thoughts.
In addition to giving feedback on the overall Drug Watch idea, let us know whether you're OK with the length of these features. They are longer than a typical NEJM Journal Watch summary because they include not only an overview and context, but also a review of the published randomized trials that resulted in FDA approval — in keeping with the overall mission of NEJM Journal Watch.
