Pivmecillinam, an antibiotic already available in other countries, has been FDA-approved for treatment of women with urinary tract infections caused by common uropathogens.
The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Guidelines for treatment of acute cystitis in women (issued in 2010; currently under revision) recommend pivmecillinam (Pivya), the prodrug of a beta-lactam antibiotic, among first-line options. Until now, this antibiotic — which has been in use in parts of Europe for decades — has not been available in the US.
Patient Population
The FDA has approved oral pivmecillinam for women with uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by susceptible isolates of Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus.
