Two large epidemiology studies showed an association between uncontrolled asthma and use of irritant and spray household disinfectants and cleaning products (Eur Respir J 2014; 43:374 and Eur Respir J 2017; 50:1700237). Now researchers have looked at so-called “green products” and disinfecting wipes to see how they compare with traditional irritant cleaners (i.e., bleach, ammonia, acids, and solvents) and sprays and their association with worsening asthma.
Among 37,000 people in a web-based cohort, ≈1700 reported having controlled asthma, and ≈500 reported having uncontrolled asthma. Use of cleaning products 4 to 7 days weekly was associated modestly with having controlled asthma and was associated substantially with having uncontrolled asth…
