The microneedle patch (MNP) is a single-administration vaccine delivery system designed to overcome the need for trained healthcare workers, obstacles associated with storage, and vaccine waste. To evaluate safety and immunogenicity of vaccines delivered via MNP, investigators in The Gambia randomized 45 adults, 120 toddlers, and 120 infants to receive measles and rubella vaccine (MRV) delivered by MNP (MRV-MNP) or subcutaneous injection (MRV-SC). Immune responses (fourfold rise in serum neutralizing antibody titers, or conversion from seronegative to seropositive, against measles or rubella) were assessed on day 42 postvaccination.
