Erenumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the calcitonin gene–related peptide (CGRP) receptor was approved by the U.S. FDA for migraine prevention in 2018, after research demonstrated the drug's efficacy in patients with both episodic migraine and chronic migraine. In LIBERTY, an industry-funded, phase 3b, double-blind treatment phase study, erenumab was safe, effective, and well tolerated over 12 weeks in patients with episodic migraine (averaging 4–14 migraine days/month in the 3 months before screening) who had previously failed 2 to 4 preventive therapies due to either intolerance or inefficacy. Now, researchers present 3-year exploratory-endpoint data from the industry-funded open-label extension phase (OLEP) of the LIBERTY study.
