Distal symmetric polyneuropathy is a common condition associated with significant disability and mortality. To determine its prevalence in a predominantly non-Hispanic Black, low-income population, researchers conducted a cross-sectional study among adults aged ≥40 years presenting for routine primary care in Flint, Michigan. The presence of distal symmetric polyneuropathy was determined using the Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score (mTCNS), which includes six symptoms and five sensory examination signs.
Of the 200 individuals who consented for the study, 169 (85%) completed all three study visits (mean age, 58 years; 55% female; 69% non-Hispanic black; 47% with an annual household income <$20,000). More than half the population had diabetes. …
