In heterosexual men, voluntary medical circumcision reduces risk for HIV acquisition by 50% to 60% and is among the strategies for HIV prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. Will this approach work in men who have sex with men? Investigators in China conducted a randomized trial of medical circumcision among men who have sex with men and who reported predominantly insertive anal intercourse. Participants were randomized to undergo circumcision at study entry (followed by a 6-week abstinence period to allow for healing) or circumcision at the end of the study (control). Both groups were followed for 1 year.
