Guidelines recommend deferring solid organ transplantation for 4 weeks after administering live virus vaccines; however, particularly in children with organ failure, this can result in skipping such vaccines entirely to avoid passing up chances for transplantation (the issue also arises for adults who are not immune to varicella-zoster virus [VZV] or who require additional measles, mumps, and rubella [MMR] vaccination).
