Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is uncommon, but it can cause blindness. The etiology is unknown, but NAION has been associated with age, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and sleep apnea. After noting anecdotally that some patients with NAION presented after starting semaglutide, researchers at a large neuro-ophthalmology referral center in Boston retrospectively investigated the potential association between NAION and this glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Patients seen in their clinic during a 6-year period who also were receiving semaglutide were propensity-score–matched to similar patients who were not using semaglutide.
