Both ischemic stroke (IS) and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) are associated with increased long-term mortality. In addition, both types of stroke are more common in Black people than white people. Several studies have reported on trends in 3-month survival, but data on longer-term outcomes are needed. Now, investigators from the well-known Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Study have reviewed local stroke surveillance data from a racially mixed metropolitan area. The first time of assessment was 1993/1994 and the latest was 2015. They assessed premorbid functional status with the modified Rankin Scale and determined death from the National Death Index.
