To determine whether atogepant, an oral calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist, is efficacious and safe in the preventive treatment of chronic migraine with and without medication overuse, researchers conducted a phase 3, double-blind, industry-funded trial. They assigned at random 755 patients with chronic migraine of at least 1 year's duration to receive 30 mg of atogepant twice daily, 60 mg once daily, or placebo for 12 weeks. Of the participants, 500 met criteria at baseline for overuse of acute medications including simple analgesics, triptans, ergots, or their combination.
